Diego Godin knows Real Madrid's Secret

A second successive Primera Division crown for the Catalans was music to the Uruguayan's ears, as he warned Atleti will be ready for Champions League revenge in Milan

Atletico Madrid star Diego Godin admitted that he was happy to see Real Madrid's La Liga challenge come up short on the final day, as he raised the stakes ahead of the derby Champions League final clash.

Both Barcelona and Madrid won on the last day of the league season on Saturday, a combination of results that left the Catalans one point clear as they lifted their sixth title in eight years.

And Godin, who saw Atletico's own bid end with a surprise defeat to Levante the previous round of fixtures, confessed that a win for Luis Enrique's men was the best outcome for him.

"If Barcelona win the league it hurts less, because our city rivals are Real Madrid," the Uruguayan told COPE on Monday.


"I have a lot of respect for Real Madrid, I do not hate them or anything, but I always want to beat them."

The two Madrid clubs will not lift a domestic trophy this term, but they will have the chance for European glory in Milan on May 28.

According to Godin, Atletico will be a fiercer prospect for Zinedine Zidane's charges than in 2014, when the Colchoneros folded 4-1 after extra time having led for much of the encounter.

"We have learned a lot from the Lisbon game. We know very well how we have to play against Real Madrid and recent results are encouraging," he said.

"We will lay out a very tactical, very physical game and I think it will be decided by a very small margin.

"The team is physically in great shape coming into the final. We will be competing 150 per cent."
